The Rossland Council for Arts & Culture (RCAC) has taken the initiative to seek similar vested arts organizations and community members to form a working group to create a community arts plan for Rossland. The goal of this group, Art Matters, is to develop an Arts Plan to provide strategic direction for the arts in our community and guide the Rossland community and the City of Rossland in its future decision-making.
The Art Matters group consists of members of some of our community’s main arts organizations including the RCAC, Columbia River Writers, Rossland Mountain Film Festival, Gold Fever Follies, Rossland Arts Centre Society, Rossland Pottery Society, Rossland Light Opera Players, Blizzard Fest, Tourism Rossland, BC Festival of the Arts, Registered Music Teachers of BC – Trail Branch, “Cabine,”, “Madhu Collective”, individual artists, and art lovers. More arts related organizations and businesses are joining.
In order to make a plan that is viable and representative of our community, the group is reaching out to a broad range of stakeholders. Whether you are a working artist, a member of an art organization, supporter of the arts through your business or a patron, we welcome all voices.
The purpose of the outreach program is to gather feedback from the artists, arts organizations, and the community at large to help define the opportunities and obstacles around which to develop a strategic direction for the arts in our community, and to help better understand community views on ways of investing long- term in the arts.
On September 18, 2019, the group launched its outreach program with the first of three Art Forums facilitated by Eden DuPont from Nelson. The session brought together a group of 30 local artists to engage in thoughtful discussions centred around building a resilient arts sector in Rossland.
All voices matter, so participation is crucial and valued. Recognizing this, the program has been designed with a multi-engagement approach to ensure inclusiveness.
Art Forums – three facilitated focus groups occurring on September 18, October 9 and November 13. Each session will include different stakeholder groups including artists, arts organizations, businesses, patrons of the arts and the community at large.
ThoughtExchange platform – OPEN now and details on how to join are below. We are asking one big question “What are your thoughts about the Arts in our community?” to gather people’s thoughts and allowing participants to rate submitted thoughts, all confidentially.
Survey – the outreach program will conclude with a survey at the Rekindle on December 7th. This is to capture those with limited digital access.
As Rossland continues to grow, this group wants to know what is important to you when it comes to the arts.
