SUMMARY:Sitka String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A part of the Performance Series\nWe hate to end the season but at least we get the pleasure of welcoming The Sitka String Quartet to the stage. \nThe Sitka String Quartet was formed by friends and colleagues in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. After years of playing together in the larger ensemble\, and sharing numerous concerts as chamber musicians within the VSO Chamber Players\, it was a natural extension of their like-minded musical curiosity\, open-heartedness\, and a fearless willingness to explore quartet repertoire across many genres that propelled these four musicians to form a professional quartet. \nThey have enjoyed shared and individual performances in Italy\, France\, Germany\, Denmark\, Poland\, Austria\, Japan\, China\, Korea\, Iraq\, Lebanon\, and Australia. Their affection for British Columbia has kept them living within a few kilometres of one another\, and they are proud to perform in their home\, BC\, whenever the opportunity arises. Memorable live performances within the last ten months include an outdoor performance on Grouse Mountain near Vancouver\, and performances at the Firehall Theatre\, and High Beams Dreams in Gibsons\, BC. \nHelp us welcome violinists Cassandra Bequary and Karen Gerbrecht\, violist Emilie Grimes\, and cellist Olivia Blander as Sitka String Quartet! \n  \n7:00pm Doors\n7:30pm Show \n90 minute performance; two 45 minute sets with intermission\nFebruary 24\, 2023 \,7:30PM \nMiners Hall\, 1765 Columbia Ave\, Rossland \n  \nNote: all online tickets have a $2 processing fee to offset PayPal charges

SUMMARY:David Buchbinder with David Restivo\, Mike Rud\, Rob Fahie\, and Joel Fountain
DESCRIPTION:A part of the Performance Series \nDAVID BUCHBINDER is a trumpeter\, composer\, producer and artistic director who has always been drawn to culture that connects us to essential\, underlying forces and to what it means to be alive\, as a body on this planet. He was deeply attracted at a very young age to music as a mysterious\, powerful and completely central experience. \nHe leads numerous music groups\, composes for concert\, theatre\, film and television\, presents large-scale performance projects and has toured extensively in North & South America and Europe. He works in musical worlds of many cultures\, much of it informed by the lessons of the jazz tradition. His Shurum Burum Jazz Circus project and recording and his Odessa/Havana project and trio of recordings were released around the world to critical and audience acclaim. \nHe was the creator and first artistic director of the world-renowned Ashkenaz Festival\, and creator/producer of multidisciplinary performances Shurum Burum Jazz Circus\, the Jerusalem Salon\, Tumbling Into Light and Routes of Andalusia\, which was commissioned by Koerner Hall to open its 2011/12 season. David was one of the inaugural Resident Artists at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts\, was the founder and CEO/Artistic Director of the creativity-based urban transformation organization Diasporic Genius\, and was the artistic director of the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra (now called Kuné). He has received 2 JUNO awards\, a Toronto Arts Award\, and a Grammy and many other nominations for his body of work. \nAt the Miners Hall this November\, expect two Davids in which to marvel. \nThese two Davids and their collaborators present an intimate concert of original jazz\, drawing on the tradition and a colorful palette of musical influences from around the World. The swing’s the thing\, for sure\, but there’s also room for Jewish\, Arabic\, Cuban\, European Classical and Sufi accents. \nBUCHBINDER AND RESTIVO  have been playing together for over a decade in and around Toronto and have just recently begun touring\, recognizing that their deep musical connection is something they want to share with a wider audience. They share musical passions and personal roots\, in Jewish and Italian New York City\, Kansas City and St. Louis. \nFor the last three years Grammy-nominated Buchbinder–a masterful trumpeter known for his Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and Juno-winning Odessa/Havana project–has been living on and off in New Orleans\, which is definitely bringing a new sound into the duo’s performances.  And Juno-nominated Restivo–recently relocated to Nelson\, BC–is recognized as one of Canada’s premier jazz pianists. Both compose music that is arresting\, robust and deep in the tradition. For this tour they are joined by the powerful rhythm section of Mike Rud (guitar)\, Rob Fahie (bass) and Joel Fountain (drums).” \n  \nNote: all online tickets have a $2 processing fee to offset PayPal charges

SUMMARY:In The Moment Visual Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The past several years has brought into focus the nature of impermanence in our daily lives. Living “in the moment” has taken on greater meaning and importance. Being in the moment can evoke countless ideas\, observing the calm and quiet that results from time slowing down\, the richness of colour as the sun sets\, the subtle beauty of a rising full moon and the crystal formations that comprise the hoarfrost in the trees are moments in time there for us to observe and contemplate. \nWest Kootenay artists/artisans were encouraged to respond to this theme with new and recent ideas and works. All original visual art works had to have been completed within the last two years and were open to submissions for all mediums by visual artists of all ages.

SUMMARY:RCAC 2022 Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:The RCAC is running this auction to support our Public Art Initiatives and Visual Arts Program. The RCAC has made a long-term commitment to public art through our Public Art Program. For the past 12 years\, the RCAC has been building a curated collection of public art installations in downtown Rossland. All of our public art is installed in public spaces that are accessible to ensure that the art is available to all. Nine permanent sculptures are already installed around Rossland with three additional sculptures on Centennial Trail. It is these three sculptures that we are auctioning off as these locations are required for the latest three sculptures that were carved during the 2022 Wood Carving Symposium. The intention of this event is to invite the general public to witness the creation of a sculpture and public art piece. Three artists carve the sculptures in downtown Rossland\, after which the sculptures are installed along Rossland’s Centennial Trail. The sculptures that are being brought down are up for auction to support a future Wood Carving Symposium and other Public Art Initiatives. \nThe intention of Public Art Program is to not only highlight arts and culture in our community but to contribute to our community’s social and economic vibrancy. Public art enhances the experience of urban spaces and communicates the presence of our active arts community. Rossland is surrounded by natural beauty\, so the RCAC has an interest in weaving sculptural and other art forms into the beauty of our community. \nThe Visual Arts committee organizes two Visual Arts Exhibitions per fiscal year and organizes visual art workshops for the community. The exhibitions are held in the Lily May Room of the historic Miners Hall in Rossland and offers an opportunity for all levels of artists and artisans to display their original work for the broader community to view and enjoy. The mandate of this committee is to provide an opportunity for all levels of artists and artisans\, ranging from hobby or emerging artists to professionals to come together in the community to exhibit their work. By offering exhibitions that celebrate all facets of creativity\, including craft\, wearable art and more traditional art forms\, we hope to inspire our community to push their creative boundaries. It is important to us as an organization to support the financial wellbeing of artists. Over the last three years we have been building capacity to remunerate artists for entering our exhibitions. We provide additional support by providing financial awards for juried categories or a “People’s Choice” award. \nDesigned to be a fundraising project\, the Art Chairs are a beautiful\, fun\, and simple way for the community to engage with local art. The goal of this project is to get local artists to create something that can be enjoyed by the community. In the future we hope to expand the project and help fund our art exhibitions and workshops. \nhttps://www.32auctions.com/RCAC-2022
