Artist Biography – Cath Ruthven
Lay down in the forest and gaze up at the sky and you’ll begin to understand acrylic artist Cath Ruthven’s perspective. She often blends vivid sunsets contrasted by tree silhouettes in simple but lively nature-inspired works.
The Kootenay, BC transplant recognized trees as a symbolic part of her life growing up in Muskoka, ON, where the forest was a playground that extended its branches into her life. Now her imaginative trees widen the eyes of children – her biggest little fans – but also many others who are drawn to her brightly-coloured creations.
Cath creates pieces as small as bookmarks and as large as murals. In addition to canvases she paints snowboards, cymbals and records repurposed as wall hangings, as well as festival stage backdrops to marry her visual art with live music. To tackle her biggest pieces, the seamstress sews canvases together, hangs them in the trees and paints from a ladder.
